Jan Nijland (1941) werd geboren in Amsterdam.

Hij begon al jong te schilderen. Via een opleiding als tekenleraar kwam hij op  de Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam terecht. Hij woont en werkt nu in Hoorn.

Schilderen is voor hem noodzaak en plezier tegelijk. Hij drukt uit in verf wat hij beleeft of ziet, en speelt vervolgens net zo lang met de vormen en kleuren tot hij de sfeer en expressie heeft gevonden die hij zoekt. Soms ontstaan er door deze manier van werken schilderijen die hij van tevoren nooit had kunnen bedenken. Zijn onderwerpen vindt hij altijd dicht bij huis: mens, dier en landschap.

Jan werkte aanvankelijk vooral met eitempera op papier of linnen. Nu gebruikt hij voor schilderijen op papier vooral acrylverf. Voor linnen doeken neemt hij olieverf.

Jan Nijland (1941) studied at the prestigious Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Here he learned to control all the processes involved in painting, from preparing his canvases and paper panels to making his own paint and making the frames around his works.

Painting is both a pleasure and a necessity to Jan. It enables him to translate what he sees and express what he feels directly on canvas or paper. This is only a first step, though. The second one is to change forms and colours until, at last, he finds the atmosphere and expression he has been looking for. It gives his paintings a layered complexity that goes beyond the spectator’s first impression.

His subjects are love, death and mortality, seasons (growth and balance) and the patterns and rhythm of water.

Jan lives and works with his partner Eva in the town of Hoorn, the Netherlands
